The UN is marking Sunday, June 26 as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

On December 12, 1997, the global body set aside June 26 of every year as the day to remember victims of torture worldwide.

It set aside the day with a view to the total eradication of torture.

The UN also seeks the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
