Everything just seems to be working in favour of Manchester City this season. While they’ve not had many serious injuries to key players this season, they’ve seen their high profile opponents lose key players to injury going into a match against them.
Aside Gabriel Jesus and Benjamin who are currently out injured, the Cityzens have all there first-teamers fit while there are still quality covers on the bench.
Liverpool on the other hand having just lost Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona will host Man City at Anfield without their most expensive signing, Virgil van Dijk. Their top performer this season, Mohammed Salah, is also just returning from injury and may not be at his best.
Van Dijk’s injury has been described as a huge blow for Liverpool who have struggled in defence this season. Last time the faced the Cityzens at the Etihad stadium, they let in five goals.
Van Dijk completed his £75m transfer from Southampton when the transfer window opened on January 1, and he was in line to make his Premier League debut against City having first appeared in the FA Cup third-round victory over Everton – a game in which he scored the winning goal.
However, reports say Van Dijk has a tight hamstring and will not be risked for today’s match.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to name Dejan Lovren alongside Joel Matip at the heart of his defence.
Regardless of the injury trouble, the Reds will hoping to become the first team to defeat Pep Guardiola’s side in a domestic competition this season.
