Yesterday Sunday was yet another bad day in the NPFL for MFM Football Club of Lagos as the Olukoya Boys suffered their third defeat of the season.
In the week 11 match, played at the Warri City Stadium, the home team, Warri Wolves defeated MFM FC by a lone goal scored by Oghenewo Uzezi in the 71st minute.
The visitors went close to taking the lead early in the first half when a 3rd minute free kick taken by Ifeanyi Ifeanyi was punched out for a corner kick by the Seasiders’ Goalkeeper, Rhogbere Tejiri.
The home team responded 7 minutes later when a scintillating run by John Odumegwu saw his shot hit the cross bar.
MFM FC pushed back their visitors with some impressive runs and won another free kick which was again taken by Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and it was de ja vu as Goalkeeper Tejiri responded with a clinical save.
There was nothing to separate the two teams at half time as the scoreline remained goalless. Though the first half was disturbed by heavy downpour, the two teams gave a good account of themselves.
At the resumption of hostilities in the second half, Warri Wolves almost broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when the eventual scorer, Uzezi’s sublime shot was saved by MFM FC’s goalkeeper, Egbe Ospino.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu of MFM made the first substitution of the match 10 minutes into the second half as he brought on Festus Ajah to replace teenage striker, Stephen Odey.
Disturbed by the rain, both teams struggled to make impacts until the 71st minute when Oghenewo Uzezi beat a brilliant Ospino who until that moment has had a decent performance to score the only goal of the match.
All efforts by MFM to grab an equalizer were in vain as the defenders of Warri Wolves stood strong to deny the visitors.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Chief Coach of the Lagos based team, Fidelis Ilechukwu blamed the heavy downpour for the undoing of his team.
“The lose is painful but the rain affected our game plan. We don’t play up ball. We always put the ball on the ground”
The Lagos-based club now sit 8th on the NPFL log with 16 points, 5 points behind leaders, Rangers FC of Enugu.
