Arsenal is close to solving one major problem that has long been identified by analysts as the reason they struggle every season – the absence of a strong and accomplished center defender.
Goal.com reports however, that Arsenal are close to signing Valencia and German defender, Shkodran Mustafi, as they’ve agreed personal terms to land him at Emirates.
Mustafi’s agent, Ali Bulut told German online site, Spox.com, that “Shkodran and Arsenal have reached an agreement, the clubs now only have to agree on the fee.”
Though Arsenal has been on the trail of Mustafi for a while, they re-energised their bid for the technically-gifted defender following injuries to key center defenders, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.
Arsenal had earlier in the summer transfer window signed a center defender, Rob Holding from Bolton. Holding was impressive at preseason, but the re-energised bid to land Mustafi apparently means Arsenal deems the former as not up to the task of the new season.
Also, the fact that Holding is still young and hasn’t proven himself on the big stage means Arsenal are still in need of a center defender they can rely on.
